This is a continuation of the quarter cent sales tax we've had in place for the last six years - with almost 30% of revenues from people visiting our city. That means everyone shares in the cost of our streets, not just Lincoln residents.
Funding for road maintenance means first responders will get to emergencies faster. Good roads are essential to our overall safety and wellbeing.
In the past six years, this funding has helped quintuple the number of street improvements we can afford to take on, and, without it, we will lose $18M annually for our roads and transportation.
In 2018, a coalition of Lincoln residents, business, and community leaders identified a $33 million annual gap in funding to meet the needs of the City’s transportation network. A year later, our community voted in favor of a quarter-cent sales tax to commit more funding to our streets.
With the help of this revenue, the $33 million annual revenue gap was reduced by nearly $18 million annually. Since 2019, it has provided $85.7 million in additional funding for street improvements and new streets, but we still have a lot of work to do.
In order to address the needs of a growing city, we must continue to invest in the infrastructure that keeps us moving throughout our city.
Without the quarter-cent sales tax, street improvements will slow, community growth will slow, and economic growth will slow.
